Understanding the impact of Channel 4’s ‘Forgotten Children Season’ on prospective parents

The challenge

To understand the impact of the three part ‘Find Me a Family’ programme on prospective parents, looking at whether and to what extent it has made them consider adopting ‘hard to place’ children

Our approach

  • Hosted four online focus groups, each with between 8 and 10 prospective parents
  • Video excerpts of the adoption season were shown to participants eliciting live reactions
  • Live video-streaming of moderator enabled better emulation of physical focus groups. The moderator is able to slow down or speed up the discussion as necessary and pause the conversation to get clarification

What happened

  • Our online approach created access to the views of a broader group of prospective parents than might otherwise be possible within this budget
  • Outputs were available immediately after events, including discussion transcripts, questionnaire data and video recordings of events for quick analysis and reporting back to Channel 4

Result

  • Participants obtained a lot of value out of the online focus groups - discussions were very lively, with participants carrying on their conversations well after the moderator had signed off
  • Participants’ responses provided an understanding of the impact on people who are thinking of adopting of the week of programmes, the online material and events
